Our Pastor

Rev. Steven Porter

MBUMC Pastor starting July 1, 2023

Rev. Steven J. Porter has served as a pastor in the Louisiana Conference for 38 years. His present charge is the Franklin - Berwick - Patterson Charge in St. Mary Parish. Before that, he served churches throughout the state, including nearby Westlake UMC in the 1990's.

Steve was born in Indiana in 1960, but was raised from a small child in Houma, La. He graduated from South Terrebonne High, L.S.U., and Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky.

Steve married Sally Stockhoff in 1986, although they are presently separated. (She is living in Hammond, near one of their sons.) Sally was born in Seoul, South Korea and adopted by a family in Oregon at 1 1⁄2 years of age. Steve and Sally have three children: a daughter, Katrena, a graduate of UNO, Southern Law School, and in May, Garrett Theological Seminary, who will be commissioned to be a probationary deacon in our Conference; Caleb, who has a masters in music education from Southeastern La University, is an educator who also is organist and choir director at FUMC Hammond; and Levi, a graduate from University of La, Lafayette in 'moving pictures arts', who helps make commercials,

documentaries, television shows, and independent movies.

Steve still likes sports, although he is more of a fan than player now. He used to love to play tennis. He injured his right knee playing ultimate Frisbee 15 years ago. He likes to read and play games and do puzzles (jigsaw and crossword). He is the family genealogist.

Some pertinent tidbits:

--Steve does not drink coffee (preferring unsweet tea or cokes).

--While he prefers lemon desserts, he does enjoy chocolate desserts

--What to call him: He always has told the children and youth to call him "Bro. Steve". But he tends to answer to whatever he is called.

--Allergic to cats, yet they have a cat, named Isa (a rescue from Hurricane Isaac in 2012).

He does not know all the answers; but he has a deep faith in God, and that as the Lord leads, Steve hopes to help make this a positive turning point for both churches. In his ministry, he is passionate for worship and prayer; he loves music; he has participated in mission opportunities; he especially enjoys teaching confirmation classes and Bible studies. Faith and patience are blessings of God's grace in his life.
